- Description:
- In 1244, hermits at Tuscany sought unity under a common rule and officer. Pope Innocent IV gave them the Rule of Saint Augustine, one of the Fathers of the Church. The Augustinians were the first missionaries in the Philippines, having accompanied Miguel LOPEZ de LEGASPI in 1565 to start Spanish settlement. This fifth in a series of vignettes about Philippine cuisine is based on the HISTORIA written by the Augustinian missionary Juan de Medina in 1630. He, like Diego Bobadilla SJ of our previous vignettes, was in the colony as it was midway through the first century of Spanish rule. The painting was a gift in 2008 from Richard and Elizabeth Hedreen to Seattle Art Museum on its 75th Anniversary. It originally was in the Sacristy, Augustinian Convent, Seville, Spain. The Saint sees a flaming heart symbolic of God’s love and religious fervour.
